About

My name is Kate and I’m a mother of 2 homesteading from our humble apartment in coastal Maine. I have a k-12 degree in Art Education, a Bachelors of Fine Arts, and a Holistic Health certificate. I began homesteading around 2006 when I watched a documentary on the dangers of plastics and another on the dangers of GMO’s. Since then, I’ve been on a crusade to banish chemicals and plastics from my home for our health and for the planet. Our simple way of living has brought our family closer together, and we’re all healthier for it. Apartmentsteading, or homesteading in an apartment, is basically limiting your footprint and living sustainably in a suburban or urban environment.

In addition to banishing plastic from our home, we have banished gluten because 2 out of 3 of us are Celiacs. This means we cannot have wheat, rye, spelt, barley, non-gluten free oats, or variations of these grains, such as semolina. You will notice that in addition to being gluten free, that many posted recipes are also vegan, both for ethical and sustainability reasons.

  1. hey Kate,
You are doing a great job. I was watching a show on TV where the anchor was discussing the same topic. Use of plastic bags and what are the disadvantages. Though I don’t know how plastic could be dangerous in other forms. I may found it here by reading your posts..so I will be around.
May Allah bless you and your loved ones. ameen

  2. Wow I can really relate! We are also “homesteading in an apartment” and hoping to buy our 1st home in the near future. I need a yard, a garden, and fresh air! We are also gluten-free with 2 of the 3 of us having celiac. We went gluten-free prior to diagnosis – so the two are unconfirmed but a 3rd blood relative was recently diagnosed and confirmed. I started my family on the diet about 5 years ago to relieve discomfort. I guess you could call it a mom’s instinct! I’m looking forward to reading and following your blog!

  3. Apartmentsteading is my new favorite term 🙂 so glad I found your blog! I’m also an apartment dweller getting ready to homeschool my littlest 2 and we’re vegan. Lots of great inspiration 😀
